Joint Seminar: Ocean eddy activity in a changing climate
Eddy activity is the primary ocean process at the practical limit of grid resolutions for robust coupled climate model simulations. This has motivated a push toward eddy-resolving model resolutions with the aim of both improving model fidelity and simulating the crucial physical and biogeochemical impacts of eddies. Despite the growing attention, knowledge gaps regarding ocean eddy activity persist in projections of climate change and in the high latitudes due to observational constraints and computational costs. I will outline cost-reducing modeling approaches that enable eddy-resolving conditions in both of these domains. I will then share the diverse and impactful roles that evolving ocean eddy activity plays in a changing climate through processes including Agulhas leakage, eddy saturation, meridional heat transport, and eddy-ice interactions.
