Joint Seminar: Understanding and projecting sea level changes: progress and gaps

Sea-level rise (SLR) is a pressing issue that demands our solid understanding and unified efforts for effective adaptation and mitigation strategies. Our comprehension of SLR has significantly improved over the past decade, enabling us to reasonably close the sea level budget and develop projections for future SLR at both global and regional levels.

In this seminar, I will present the research works conducted by the CSIRO sea level team, focusing on our efforts to understand global and regional sea level changes and to project future SLR at regional scale. Main topics to be covered include regional sea-level budget closure, validation of near-term projections against observational data, the application of the Emergent Constraint methodology to constrain thermosteric SLR resulting from ocean warming, generation of high-resolution dynamic sea level via dynamical downscaling, and the derivation of detailed sea level fingerprints in response to land ice melting. Some gaps, challenges and possible future directions in regional sea-level projections will be discussed in the end.
