Forschungsinteressen

Klimasystemdynamik und Klimageschichte sind meine Interessengebiete. Insbesondere fasziniert mich die Wechselwirkung zwischen der Atmosphäre und der Landoberfläche mit ihrer Vegetation. Welche Rolle spielt diese Wechselwirkung für die Entwicklung des globalen und regionalen Klimas?

Anfang der 1990er Jahre konnte ich zeigen, dass das System Vegetation – Klima bei gleichem Klimaantrieb verschiedene Gleichgewichtszustände annehmen kann. Diese Entdeckung führte zur Erkenntnis, dass ein Ökosystem nicht nur durch rein biologische Vorgänge, sondern auch durch die Wechselwirkung mit dem Klima abrupte Umbrüche erfahren kann, sobald sich die äußeren Bedingungen ändern. Dies geschieht zum Beispiel durch die allmählichen, langperiodischen Änderungen der Erdbahn um die Sonne, welche die Verteilung der Einstrahlung auf der Erde und die Länge der Jahreszeiten ändern, oder durch den gegenwärtigen Anstieg der Treibhausgase.  

Ein wichtiger Schwerpunkt meiner Forschung ist die Entwicklung der Sahara. Dabei interessieren mich folgende Fragen: Warum war die Sahara während wärmerer Phasen der letzten Jahrhunderttausende deutlich grüner und das Klima der Sahara deutlich feuchter als heute? Warum hat sich die Sahara vor einigen tausend Jahren in einigen Regionen sehr rasch - geologisch gesehen quasi abrupt - ausgebreitet und in anderen Regionen eher allmählich? Könnte die Sahara durch die aktuellen globalen Klimawandel wieder grüner werden?
