Forschungsinteressen
Meine Forschung konzentriert sich auf Klimavariabilität auf verschiedenen Zeitskalen. Mein besonderes Interesse gilt der multi-dekadischen bis hundertjährigen Variabilität des Atmosphäre-Ozean-Systems, mittelfristige Vorhersagen und der Variabilität des Klimas im Holozaen und in den letzten 2000 Jahren.
Gemeinsam mit Doktoranden und Postdocs habe ich mich mit der multi-dekadischen Variabilität im Atlantik und dem Zusammenhang zwischen der atlantischen meridionalen Umwälzzirkulation und dem Modus der Variabilität beschäftigt, der als Atlantische Multidekadische Variabilität bezeichnet wird. Ich interessiere mich dafür, wie Ozean und Atmosphäre zusammenwirken, um diese Variabilität zu erzeugen und aufrechtzuerhalten und um den Wert solcher Trajektorien für mittelfristige Klimavorhersagen abzuschätzen. Darüber hinaus trage ich zur Erforschung der Frage bei, wie das Klimasystem auf äußere Einflüsse, z. B. Vulkanausbrüche, reagiert und wie sich das Klima in der Vergangenheit unter solchen Einflüssen entwickelt hat.
Am MPI-M habe ich eine wichtige Rolle bei der Entwicklung der Erdsystemmodelle MPI-ESM und ICON-ESM gespielt und den Beitrag des MPI-M zur sechsten Phase des Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) koordiniert. Meine Gruppe hat auch zu mehreren Zyklen des Paleo Model Intercomparison Project (PMIP) beigetragen. Weiterhin habe ich die PMIP-weiten Simulationen über das letzte Jahrtausend als Teil von CMIP6 koordiniert.
In jüngster Zeit beteilige ich mich an ultrahochauflösenden (km-Skala), sturm- und wirbelauflösenden gekoppelten Ozean-Atmosphären-Simulationen unter Verwendung von ICON-Sapphire. Hier liegt der Forschungsschwerpunkt als Teil des EU H2020 „NextGEMS“ Projektes, auf Ozeanprozessen und Ozean-Atmosphären-Wechselwirkungen im tropischen Atlantik.
