Joint Seminar: The Weather of the 21st Century - From Climate Change to Weather Change

The warming of the Earth’s climate is fundamentally changing our weather. Important decisions lie ahead of us. Where should we place solar and wind energy infrastructure to reliably supply the world with electricity whilst optimising return on investment? How will weather changes affect our food production and freshwater supply? Should we invest in bigger dams to increase our resilience to drought, or better flood mitigation to manage more intense rainfall? This will require us to know the future of our weather, which means to transform our thinking of climate change to one of weather change.

This seminar presents how the recently funded Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the Weather of the 21st Century, in which the MPI for Meteorology is a partner, aims to address some of these very challenging questions. We will describe the Centre’s research programs and projects, which are focussed in the areas of circulation change, weather change and ultra-high resolution modelling for research. Using recent examples, we will identify possible research avenues to better understand how climate and weather connect. We will also briefly outline some of the Centre’s activities beyond research alone, such as those in training, engagement, and outreach.

The main purpose of the presentation is to generate and discuss ideas for collaboration between the 21st Century Weather Centre and the MPI-M.
