KlimaCampus Kolloquium: Is the Atlantic Overturning Circulation slowing?

The possible collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), in the public known as the Gulf stream circulation, as a result of global warming is attracting a great deal of public attention. Numerous scientific publications indeed show that in climate models, the AMOC could collapse abruptly under strong freshwater forcing due to Greenland ice melt, and some suggest that this could happen in the next few decades. Direct AMOC measurements have only been available for about 20 years, which is too short a time to recognize a sustainable trend. What do other variables such as the sea surface temperature show and how reliable are the models? This talk discusses some of the major uncertainties regarding the future evolution of the AMOC.
