Peter Korn awarded visiting professorship at Imperial College London

Imperial College London is one of the strongest research universities in the world and one of the top locations for the natural sciences. Peter Korn, a scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) since 2002, has now been appointed Visiting Professor at the renowned institution. In recent years, Korn has successfully collaborated with colleagues in London on stochastic climate modeling, which is based on Klaus Hasselmann’s pioneering research, and on the question of how randomness can be mathematically integrated into climate models. In this context, the habilitated mathematician has been a regular guest at Imperial College. "The cooperation with colleagues at Imperial College is a bridge between climate science and mathematics. The appointment as Visiting Professor is an appreciation of this work and an encouragement to continue on this path," says Korn.
Since 2020, Peter Korn has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the European Research Council (ERC) funded project “Stochastic Transport in Upper Ocean Dynamics” (STUOD), led by Imperial College in collaboration with the French partners Centre Ifremer and INRIA. Korn has previously been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the “Mathematics of Planet Earth” graduate program at Imperial College and the University of Reading. He has worked for many years in the field of computational atmospheric and ocean research and has played a leading role in the development of the ocean component of the ICON model used at the MPI-M. Together with Nils Brüggemann, he currently leads the “Complex Modeling and Extreme Computing” research group in Jochem Marotzke's “Climate Variability” department.
