KlimaCampus Kolloquium: Order in chaos: can we predict turbulent dynamics?
Turbulent dynamics is known to be highly unpredictable and highly sensitive to initial and boundary conditions. On the other hand, current HPC systems are close to km-scale modeling in global weather and climate simulations. Is reaching this goal merely a software/hardware challenge, or is there a theoretical limit to computability, once we reach scales on which fully developed three-dimensional turbulence dominates? In this talk I will focus on the fundamental partial differential equations describing fluid flow and talk about recent work in the mathematics community on a new class of non-classical solutions which seem to reflect well several observed properties of turbulent flow, but require a new take on how one should think about and numerically compute them.
