Peter Korn has successfully completed his habilitation at the Universität Hamburg

Dr. Peter Korn, scientist and head of the group "Applied Mathematics and Computational Physics" in the department "The Ocean in the Earth System" at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) successfully habilitated on January 23, 2020.

[Translate to English:]

In his habilitation lecture "Computational Ocean Modelling - A Structure-Preserving Approach on Unstructured Grids" he explained the basics and challenges of ocean modelling on unstructured grids as well as the numerical ideas underlying the ocean model ICON-O at MPI-M.

Peter Korn's research is dedicated to the study of numerical geophysical fluid dynamics and explores the fluid dynamic core of atmospheric and ocean models. He works at the interface between applied mathematics, atmospheric/ocean sciences and scientific computing. He investigates methods from mathematical fluid dynamics, numerical analysis and numerical fluid mechanics and tries to gain knowledge from numerical experiments, theoretical considerations and the interaction between the two.

His current scientific focus is on the development of ocean models and numerical geophysical fluid dynamics. Peter Korn develops structure-preserving discretization methods for the oceanic primitive equations within the MPI-M internal project ICON. For performance reasons, the architecture of modern supercomputers suggests the use of nearly uniform grids for the tessellation (decomposition of curved surfaces) of the Earth. This excludes traditional latitude-length grids and leads to so-called unstructured grids, such as the icosahedral grid used in the new Earth system model ICON.

Peter Korn received his diploma in mathematics and physics from the Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. He received his PhD in 2000, also at the Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, with a thesis on "Uncertainty Principles for Weyl-Heisenberg Frames". Peter Korn has been a scientist at the MPI-M since 2002, and since 2008 he has been group leader of the research group "Applied Mathematics and Computational Physics".
