Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology: One of a kind in Germany: New high-performance computer for Earth system research inaugurated

A new supercomputer named “Levante” was inaugurated at the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) on 22 September 2022. For the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, it represents the essential research infrastructure for climate modeling. The supercomputer is virtually the laboratory and main tool of the researchers and thus of utmost importance for cutting-edge research. The new high-performance computer system is about 5 times more powerful than its predecessor and opens up new perspectives for computer-based climate research.

Prof. Jochem Marotzke, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology: “The new machine and the proven collaboration with DKRZ have just enabled us to get our hands on a piece of the 'holy grail' of climate modeling: We have simulated the global climate system (ocean and atmosphere) with a grid size of only 1 km — for only a few hours, but this has never been possible for anyone else before. This was only possible because we now have Levante.”
