Hartmut Graßl is not only director emeritus at MPI-M but also professor emeritus at the Meteorological Institute at Universität Hamburg. He was director of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) in Geneva, twice member and chairman of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU), winner of the German Environmental Award for his contribution to the explanation and prediction of climate variability, and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federation of German Scientists (VDW).

Climate protection and energy transition are two topics that the physicist has been addressing since the 1980s. Today, he is still active in the training of junior scientists, as a board member of the PhD programme run jointly by the MPI-M and Universität Hamburg.

“I am delighted to congratulate Hartmut Graßl on behalf of the entire institute,” says Prof. Dr. Jochem Marotzke, Managing Director of the MPI-M, “and I am just sad that I cannot do so in person right now. The institute is indebted to Hartmut Graßl for still pulling his full weight in our graduate education.”
