Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship for Laura Suarez-Gutierrez

Dr. Laura Suarez-Gutierrez, scientist in the department “The Ocean in the Earth System” at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, successfully applied for a prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship. At the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich and the Institute Pierre-Simon Laplace (IPSL) in Paris, she will be studying the most devastating but physically plausible combinations of extreme heat. The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology warmly congratulates her on this achievement.

Dr. Suarez-Gutierrez is a postdoctoral researcher investigating extreme heat, its driving mechanisms and variability under changing levels of global warming. She completed her PhD, entitled “Internal variability in summertime heat extremes under global warming”, in June 2019 at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. Afterwards she focused on understanding the variability of European heat extremes on timescales of a few years to decades within the ClimXtreme project, which aims to advance research on extreme events in the context of climate change. In the last years, Dr. Suarez-Gutierrez successfully assessed how the likelihood of low-probability, high-impact heat extremes change under global warming, identifying risk hotspots for different forms of extreme heat stress. For that purpose she used climate model large ensembles and developed innovative and effective methods to exploit these to their full potential.

Dr. Suarez-Gutierrez: “My ultimate goal is to understand the worst-case heat extremes that we may come to endure in the near future, in its most devastating albeit physically plausible forms, disentangling their likelihood and drivers. With my research, I aim to bring awareness and preparedness for such devastating events, and in turn to avoid their potential socioeconomic and ecological damages, as well as the unnecessary loss of human lives.”

About the Fellowship

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship is a European Union flagship fellowship program for researchers. Its objective is to support researchers’ careers and foster excellence in research. The Postdoctoral Fellowships action targets researchers holding a PhD who wish to carry out their research activities abroad, acquire new skills and develop their careers. They help researchers gain experience in other countries, disciplines and non-academic sectors.
