Shown are several flow quantities such as horizontal velocity, vorticity, the velocity gradient, and an eddy detection through the Q-criterion. The Q criterion is an important calculation used to identify vortices.
The second movie shows how the hurricanes Matthew and Nicole affect the ocean surface temperature. Shown is the temperature difference between the actual state and the initial state when the hurricanes are beginning to form.
