The presentation of the honorary membership was planned in connection with the colloquium of the Section North Germany on June 16, 2020 in the Seewetteramt in Hamburg. Due to the corona crisis it will take place at a later point in time.
Hartmut Graßl is not only director emeritus at MPI-M and professor emeritus at the Meteorological Institute at Universität Hamburg. He was also director of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) in Geneva, twice member and chairman of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU), winner of the German Environmental Award for his contribution to the explanation and prediction of climate variability, and is chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federation of German Scientists (VDW).
The DMG awards honorary membership to persons who have rendered outstanding services to meteorology and the DMG. Currently Prof Dr Walter Fett (appointed in 1990) and Prof Dr Jens Taubenheim (appointed in 2001) are honorary members of the DMG. This year, at the suggestion of the Executive Board, the Presidium has applied for honorary membership to two further members. Besides Prof Graßl, this is Prof. Herbert Fischer, former head of the Department of Atmospheric Trace Gases and Remote Sensing at the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK-ASF) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
