Guy Brasseur honored with the AGU Kaufman Prize

In recognition of his commitment to international scientific collaboration, the American Geophysical Union honored Guy Brasseur with the Kaufman Outstanding Research and Unselfish Cooperation Award.

At this year’s largest gathering of Earth and space scientists, the 2024 meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in Washington, D.C., Guy Brasseur was honored with the Yoram J. Kaufman Outstanding Research and Unselfish Cooperation Award. The former director of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and leader of the “Environmental Modeling” research group has been an AGU member since 1978 and received the prize for his exceptional dedication to the international research community in atmospheric sciences. His multifaceted activities span decades and include engagements and projects on almost all continents, including Asia, South America, and Africa.

Currently, Guy Brasseur is leading a research group at MPI-M working on air quality in different regions of the world. Recent projects include PANDA, a European partnership with China on the issue of air pollution, PAPILA with Latin America, the European project FOCAL for the exploration of local climate information, and several more.

The Kaufman Award of the AGU recognizes a senior scientist’s broad influence in atmospheric science. It was named in honor of Yoram J. Kaufman, an atmospheric scientist who served as a mentor and devoted his career to international collaborations. It is presented annually at the AGU meeting in December, which has around 25,000 participants from more than 100 countries.
