Delegation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences visits MPI-M

On the occasion of 50 years of collaboration between the Max Planck Society and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Chinese delegation is currently visiting the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, intensifying a long-standing important partnership.

Science thrives on international exchange – which is why the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is collaborating closely with numerous partners around the globe. On November 1st, 2024, a delegation from the renowned Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) visited the institute, marking the conclusion of a week full of inspiring mutual activities. MPI-M has maintained a long-standing and successful partnership with the Institute for Atmospheric Physics (IAP) of CAS, as underscored by the appointment of MPI-M-researcher Chao Li as Distinguished Guest Professor at IAP/CAS earlier this year.

On behalf of the MPI-M, the directors Sarah Kang and Bjorn Stevens as well as the researchers Chao Li and Lin Lin from the Climate Variability department welcomed IAP/CAS’s Director-in-General Junji Cao, CAS-Academician Jianping Huang from Lanzhou University and other delegates in order to discuss current and future projects. One topic, for example, was next steps regarding the Earth Virtualization Engines Initiative (EVE), in which CAS is an important partner. Additionally, the agenda included a campus tour of the University of Hamburg as well as a visit to the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ), one of MPI-M’s closest partners. Together with DKRZ director Thomas Ludwig, the group explored possibilities for cooperation between DKRZ and the Chinese computing center EarthLab.

CAS's visit at MPI-M was part of a larger delegation trip to Germany: The week started off in Berlin with a celebratory act to mark 50 years of collaboration between the Max Planck Society (MPG) and CAS, also involving Bjorn Stevens and Chao Li from MPI-M. In addition, CAS hosted a joint conference with the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, to which Li contributed. The week concluded with several trips to different institutes of the MPG, MPI-M being one of them.
