The Roddam Family Medal for the best PhD thesis is an endowment medal by the late Prof. Roddam Narasimha. Prof. Narasimha has made contributions in the area of fluid mechanics, aeronautics and atmospheric science. He began the atmospheric science research at IISc and established the Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences in 1982.
Chetan Jalihal wrote his dissertation “Energetics of monsoon variability over the last 22,000 years” at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. In his thesis, he has used an emerging theory of monsoons (based on conservation of energy and moisture) to quantify the role of forcings and feedbacks on monsoons. With this he has highlighted important differences in land and ocean monsoons. This was the key factor in addressing a 30-year long debate in paleo-monsoons.
Chetan Jalihal received his Bachelor’s degree in electronics and telecommunication engineering in 2013 at the Goa Engineering College in Goa, India, and his Master’s degree at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in 2015. He submitted his PhD thesis in 2020. He is interested in understanding ancient climates by using a combination of complex Earth system models and simple theoretical models. He is currently working on the millennial-scale oscillations in Atlantic Overturning Circulation (AMOC) at the MPI-M.
