Chenbo Guo becomes head of administration at Max Planck Institute for Meteorology

Chenbo Guo took over the position of head of administration at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) from her predecessor Reiner Letscher on January 1, 2023. The MPI-M wishes Chenbo Guo every success. Reiner Letscher, who has held the position since 1999, will continue to serve the institute until mid-2023 after which he will retire.

Chenbo Guo fulfills all the prerequisites for her new task. After studying International Management with a Master's degree in Reutlingen, she was initially responsible for international student and academic exchange programs at the International Office of Zeppelin University on Lake Constance. Three years later in 2006, she moved to the Universität Hamburg, and became a research assistant at the Chair of Organizational Management of the WiSo Faculty, where she supported the Principal Investigators and coordinated her first EU project.

Since then, Chenbo Guo has worked first as a project staff member and later as a project manager in various EU collaborative research projects at the Universität Hamburg, including the THOR and NACLIM projects, each with over 20 consortium partners, including the MPI-M. In 2016, Chenbo Guo moved from the Universität Hamburg to the MPI-M as EU- and third-party funding liaison officer and at the same time as team leader of third-party funding/projects. For her, the most important and motivating tasks are, together with her team colleagues, to support the scientists in identifying appropriate third-party funding schemes, creating ambitious, responsive and well-prepared proposals. She also likes the challenge of navigating the regulations of different funding agencies, and successfully mastering administrative project implementation and reporting tasks.

Chenbo Guo: “I really like how closely science and service work together at the MPI-M. Everything I ever wished at the university I experience here first-hand day by day.”

MPI-M, she said, is a small world where many different topics come together, from physics to mathematics to high-performance computing, electrical engineering, organizational behavior, communications, grant and labor law, and much more. So, she says, this is a lot of fun if you go about your work with an open mind and an appetite for new topics. That's why she's looking forward to new challenges in a new role.
