Lecture series - Opportunities and risks of removing CO2 from the atmosphere

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is the top priority when it comes to limiting climate change. However, in order to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045, we also need processes that permanently remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In particular, residual emissions that are difficult to avoid must be offset by carbon dioxide removal. A whole range of land-based measures are being discussed, from reforestation and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage to additional carbon storage in the soil. However, three quarters of the ice-free land area is already used for agriculture or forestry - how serious will conflicts of use turn out to be? But purely technological measures and CDR methods in the ocean are also being discussed. Which portfolios of measures are sensible? To what extent is CO2 removal feasible? What side effects can be expected for humans and nature? These and other fundamental questions on CO2 removal will be discussed in this lecture.
