Joint Seminar: How to make efficient use of future supercomputers to make better weather and climate predictions sooner

It is difficult to make reliable predictions for weather and climate due to the complexity of the Earth System and the non-linear dynamics of atmosphere and ocean. Due to the size of the Earth, resolution of global weather and climate simulations is limited by the capacity of today's supercomputers. An increase in resolution would likely improve quality of weather and climate predictions.

I will present an overview on ongoing efforts at the European Weather Centre (ECMWF) to improve performance of global simulations and to enable global simulations at very high-resolution (up to 1km) in the future. I will present several scientific approaches to improve efficiency of simulations of weather and climate models via an adjustment of numerical precision and model accuracy to model error, and the use of deep learning tools within weather and climate models.
