Joint Seminar: More Than a Coefficient: Atmospheric State and Spatial Scales Shape Air-Sea Interactions

We often describe climate change in terms of a warming atmosphere, but the ocean plays an equally fundamental role in the evolution of the climate system. Through it’s constant interaction with the atmosphere, it stores vast amounts of heat and CO₂, and contributes to regulating the water cycle and Earth’s radiative balance. Over the past two decades, satellite observations and models have greatly advanced our understanding of ocean–atmosphere interactions, revealing a complex network of feedbacks and coupling mechanisms between the two components of the climate system. The covariance between different processes introduces nonlinearities and feedbacks that are difficult to capture, especially when they take place across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Yet not all interactions are equally important under all conditions.
A key challenge is therefore to understand when air–sea interactions become relevant, and what controls their intensity. Which environmental conditions enhance or suppress them? Are they invariant on scale? And what could be missing in our larger-scale climate models?
