Joint Seminar: The convective parameterization problem: an investigation

The convective parameterization problem in global atmospheric
modelliing (a well as in regional modelling) is still considered to be
a major unresolved issue. Considering a rather slow progress with this
problem, a fundamental breakthrough should now be required.

For this goal, the "deconstruction" of the convective parameterization
problem is performed under a spirit of a French philosophical
tradition. It will be shown that the current standard massflux
convective parameterization can be constructed from a cloud-resolving
model (CRM) with few distinguished steps. An important finding of this
"deconstruction" analysis is that at each step, a self-contained
subgrid-scale representation scheme is obtained, thus the
deconstruction leads to a hierarchy of schemes spanning from the
super-parameterization to the traditional parameterization.

At the first step of deduction, the full CRM is reduced to a
representation by an ensemble of "plume" modes under
segmentally-constant approximation (SCA).  Some numerical
demonstrations of CRM-SCA will be presented, and possible
implementations into GCM will be discussed.
