The RAPID array at 26N in the Atlantic uses boundary density profiles to continuously calculate mid-ocean transport, which, when combined with Florida Strait and Ekman transports, yields the meridional overturning circulation (MOC). This project yields insights into the dynamics of the MOC and serves as a reference value both for models (to evaluate their accuracy) and for the future (as a baseline for changes in ocean circulation). The calculations have been recently extended to heat transport, and currently we are developing methods to calculate salinity transport. Specifically, I will discuss how to calibrate the submarine cable in the Florida Straits for salinity transport.
