Simulations of single clouds or what a LES-type model can tell us about larger scales

Clouds are an important component in the Earth's energy budget and a
main driver of atmospheric circulation. However, clouds are only poorly
represented in global climate models. LES-type models can simulate
single clouds in great detail but often lack the connection to larger
scales. In addition, these simulations are often very specific so that
general conclusions are difficult to obtain. Here results from the
high-resolution model ATHAM are presented for two different cloud types.
Some general conclusions are drawn for larger scales. In the case of
stratocumulus clouds the radiative forcing due to aerosol indirect effects
is strongly modified by dynamical feedbacks. Results from deep
convective clouds can help to improve their representation in climate
