Joint Seminar: Quantum computers now and in the near future: a realistic perspective

Quantum computers leverage effects emerging from the physics that governs our surroundings at the smallest scales – like superposition, interference and entanglement – to perform computations. There are reasons to believe that quantum computers will one day be superior to classical computers in solving selected difficult problems. For example, there are theoretical arguments for advantages in prime factorization, quantum systems simulation, or in the context of machine learning subroutines. However, these require fault-tolerant quantum computers whose hardware requirements far exceed what is currently possible. Nevertheless, there is a considerable “hype” around quantum computing right now, with billions of dollars in investments around the globe being poured into research. In this talk, I will give a brief introduction to quantum computing, describe the current state of the art and put the hype around quantum technologies in general and quantum computers in particular into context.
