From new UV/vis satellite instruments like GOME and SCIAMACHY it is possible to retrieve the total column precipitable water over both oceans and continents with similar sensitivity. In addition, also information on cloud properties can be derived from the measured absolute intensity and the absorption of atmospheric O2. From the global time series of these quantities it is possible to derive trends and to relate them to the trends of the atmospheric temperature. In addition, the correlation of monthly mean anomalies of these anomalies with those of the surface near temperature allow to derive information on climate feedback mechanisms. For many areas on earth we find a positive correlation between temperature and the total column preciptable water as well as cloud top height.
