The oceanic oxygen and carbon cycles are sensitive to climate variability on various timescales. This talk explores the impacts of internally generated and externally forced climate variability on the air-sea exchange of oxygen and carbon, focusing on El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and recent volcanic eruptions. We find both forms of climate variability to have major impacts on O2 and CO2 fluxes in both observations and models, driven by physical-biogeochemical interactions in the equatorial Pacific and changes in ocean ventilation rates at higher latitudes. Understanding the response of the oceanic oxygen and carbon cycles to climate variability has major implications for the interpretation of recently observed trends in dissolved oxygen and carbon in the ocean, and offer unique tests for models' representation of the coupling between ocean physical and biogeochemical dynamics.
