Joint Seminar: Will biomass burning in Indonesia be potentially increased under the anthropogenic tropical warming ?

Biomass burning is one of the environmental issues that affects the regional air quality and acts as
a disproportionately large source of greenhouse gas emissions. Indonesia is one of the countries
that recently experiences more forest fires, and during the drought periods, the burning was often
more uncontrollable. It raises to a question if the anthropogenic warming has contributed to past
haze events, or if their frequency will increase in the future. We analyzed the past drought-related
fires through two sets of atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) ensemble experiments
driven by observed sea surface temperature (SST) for 1960–2011, one with and one without an
anthropogenic warming component. Then, the future increase in the frequency of droughts is
suggested from the analyses of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 model
ensembles. The results will be shown in the seminar. Additionally, the performance of the MPI
models, that are contributed to the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) and
Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5(CMIP5), related to the present study will also be
