Joint Seminar: The Last One at the Buffet - What Controls the Reactivity of Sedimentary Organic Matter Towards Microbial Degradation

Quantifying the rates of biogeochemical processes in marine sediments is essential for understanding global element cycles and climate change. Because organic matter degradation is the engine behind benthic dynamics, deciphering the impact that various forces have on this process is central to determining the evolution of the Earth system. This presentation will explore the fate of organic matter during burial in marine sediment on large spatial and temporal scales by means of reaction-transport modelling (diagenetic modelling) and assess its impacts on global biogeochemical cycles and climate.
