Joint Seminar: Adventure Climate Science: Thirteen Months as a Scientist in Antarctica
Neumayer III is the only station on an Antarctic ice shelf that is operated year-round. Our nearest neighbors were 300 kilometers away at SANAE IV. For eight months of the year, the station is physically cut off from the rest of the world. Nine people are on site to run everything—power, water, food, and medical care—and carry out the full observation program. I spent thirteen months there as the operator of the air chemistry observatory. This talk is not about results — those are in the papers. It's about the how: how you get there, how you're supplied, what the summer and winter seasons mean for a station, and how you keep the measurements running continuously through the polar night. It is mostly pictures and videos of the station, the measurement facilities, the ice shelf, emperor penguins, icebergs, and the aurora that come with the location.
