Joint Seminar: How much AMOC weakening would cool Europe under climate change?
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a major system of currents projected to weaken in the future, but with a wide uncertainty on the timing and magnitude of weakening. Despite the broad recognition that a weakening AMOC cools the Northern Hemisphere and Europe, existing studies do not provide a clear answer on the net temperature effect of AMOC weakening in Europe when considered jointly with global warming. We perform a wide set of model simulations with combined AMOC weakening and emission scenarios, which allows us to draw region-specific conclusions about the interaction of global warming and AMOC-induced cooling.
