During my PhD thesis (entitled "Performance of Current Models of Speech Recognition and Resulting Challenges") in Opens external link in current windowMedical Physics section of the University of Oldenburg I investigated speech intelligibility of normal-hearing listeners in various background noises. I investigated how the masking of a speech signal is affected by the variety of background noises and if so determined speech reception thresholds can be simulated. I especially focused on the issue of informational masking both in monaural (one-ear) and binaural (two-ear) listening situations.This work was done within the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre SFB/TRR31 "The Active Auditory System" under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dr. Birger Kollmeier. I did my diploma thesis (entitled "The Density Distribution of Ultra-High-Energy Protons in the Local Galaxy Supercluster") at the University of Hamburg in the astroparticle Opens external link in current windowgroup of Prof. Dr. Dieter Horns. I simulated the distribution of ultra-high-energy protons, emerging from the Virgo galaxy cluster, on their way to the earth's atmosphere. I investigated how effects such as magnetic fields and background photon fields influence the proton distribution. 

Subjects I studied in detail during my diploma studies were astrophysics, biophysics, elementary particle physics and cosmology. The picture above was taken at CERN in the cavern of the CMS tracker during its shutdown in 2014.
