Thesis: The role of North Atlantic decadal climate processes for European summer climate
Supervisor: Dr. Wolfgang A. Mueller, Prof. Dr. Johanna Baehr, Prof. Dr. Jochem Marotzke
Brief Synopsis of Research:
The aim of the thesis is to find out an atmospheric pathway between Atlantic Multidecadal Variability
(AMV) and European climate in summer. I found a North-Atlantic-European East West (NEW)
atmospheric mode relating AMV and European summer. I further explained that this NEW mode is a
baroclinic response from the diabatic heating of the north-western Atlantic ocean which affects the
European climate through temperature advection and by creating atmospheric blocking-like situation.
The thesis goes further exploring the NEW mode in the model simulations and in conducting idealised
experiments to understand the atmospheric response in the model to AMV like SST anomalies.
