Joint Seminar: Multi-year prediction of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

Variations in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) can significantly affect northward ocean heat transport, and therefore also European and North Atlantic climate. In the near term (interannual to decadal), AMOC and other climate variations are influenced by both anthropogenic forcing and natural variability, and thus near-term predictions need to be initialised from the current ocean state reflecting the present phase of interannual-to-decadal variability. In my talk, I will discuss the results of initialized decadal prediction experiments performed with the ECHAM5/MPI-OM coupled model, focusing on the predictability of AMOC strength, North Atlantic deep water transport, and North Atlantic heat transport.
