After introducing the topic and the discussion of general aspects of turbulent flows, I will present results on the acceleration and the two-particle dispersion. In our experiments we use a 3D direct imaging particle tracking technique that measures simultaneously the position, velocities and accelerations of many particles advected by the flow with very high temporal and spatial resolution. I will compare the results with predictions from Heisenberg (1948), Richardson (1925), and Batchelor (1956) and will give an overview of our measurements at the Göttingen Turbulence Facility and on the Zugspitze.
