Joint Seminar: The US Department of Energy’s Global Storm-Resolving Model: Plans and Progress

For the past 5 yrs, the US Department of Energy (DOE) has been developing the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). A major new focus on that effort is building a Simple Cloud-Resolving E3SM Atmosphere Model (called SCREAM). By explicitly resolving large convective events - which are a major source of uncertainty in future projections - models like SCREAM are designed to break the ongoing cloud parameterization deadlock. The computational demands of such a model, however, limit their current use to annual- to decadal- timescales. As a result, clever experimental design is needed to extract useful information from models of this type. Maximizing computational efficiency is also critical. DOE is ideally situated to tackle this last problem due to its ongoing focus on building and exercising the world’s fastest supercomputers. In this talk, I will describe in detail the SCREAM model and its planned usage.
