Joint Seminar: Whither clouds

We explore the use of aqua planets to evaluate cloud effects on 
climate. Our results suggest that the aqua-planet model formulation is a
good predictor of the behavior of more earth-like formulations. In part,
the skill of the aqua-planet reflects the dominant effect of low-clouds in
modulating inter-model differences in cloud effects (feedbacks) and the
tendency of low-clouds to vary in response to changes in the zonally
symmetric circulation. This work is used to motivate more detailed
investigations of two low-cloud regimes using a combination of simple
theory, large-eddy simulation and in situ data. Work in the stratocumulus
realm shows that large-eddy simulation is a priori a poor predictor of
stratocumulus cloud amount, in part due to a poor representation of mixing
processes at cloud top. A posteriori corrections can lead to
significantly improved prediction which forms the basis for ongoing
explorations of aerosol/precipitation affects on cloudiness.
