Special seminar: Discussion on "Preparations for the IPCC Sixth Assessment Cycle (2015-2022)"

During the AR6, the IPCC will prepare one methodological report (an update on the guidelines for national greenhouse gas inventories), three special reports, scheduled for 2018 and 2019, and its main assessment report, scheduled for 2021-2022 (Working Group and Synthesis reports), see www.ipcc.ch for more details. The three special reports are related to:

  • global warming of 1.5 °C: an IPCC special report on the impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels and related global greenhouse gas emission pathways, in the context of strengthening the global response to the threat of climate change, sustainable development, and efforts to eradicate poverty (the outline has been approved this fall and the call for authors is open);
  • climate change and the oceans and the cryosphere (with a scoping meeting scheduled next week);
  • climate change, desertification, land degradation, sustainable land management, food security, and greenhouse gas fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems (with a scoping meeting scheduled in February 2017).

The scoping meeting for the Working Group main assessment report will take place in May 2017.

The visit of Valérie Masson-Delmotte (co-chair of WGI, "physical science basis") and Anna Pirani (head of the Technical Support Unit of WGI) is an opportunity for discussions and suggestions for consideration for the AR6 reports. They have a specific interest to exchange with the scientific community on their expectations for the chapter structure of the AR6, WGI report.
