Joint Seminar: The UK Earth System Model: Developments for CMIP6 and beyond

The UK Earth System Model (UKESM1) is currently under development, with a planned release in Summer 2017. This talk gives an overview over UKESM1 and its components. These comprise the physical core (HadGEM3 GC3.1), the models for atmospheric chemistry and ocean biogeochemistry, and the dynamic ice sheet model. In addition, we report on the latest developments. Here, the focus is on the low-resolution version of HadGEM3 GC3.1 whose development was necessary in order to make UKESM1, with the additional Earth system components, feasible to run for centennial time-scale experiments such as planned for CMIP6. While the Earth System model is still being developed, the physical core HadGEM3 GC3.1 (in two different horizontal resolutions) has recently been frozen.
