Joint Seminar: The Convective Cloud Field Model" - a new parameterization of convective clouds with applications in GCMs and LAMs

A new parameterization was developed for convective cloud spectra in
GCMs and LAMs that is based on principles of population dynamics. It can
be shown that this parameterization is an extension of the "classical"
Arakawa-Schubert problem, where we omit the restrictions of equilibrium
and stationarity. The new scheme provides spectra of cloud types and
their specific coverage, vertical velocities, cloud heights, rainfall
intensities etc. that are unavailable from other parameterizations.
Results will be shown of the performance of the parameterization in
single column mode and for a 20 year control run of ECHAM5-HAM. Further
examples of applications cover simulations of the smoke episode of
1997/98 in Indonesia, where the extended peat fires led to changes in
cloud microphysics resulting in significant reduction in rainfall.
