Observations from the DYNAMO field campaign have yielded considerable new insight regarding the initiation of the Madden--Julian Oscillation (MJO) over the Indian Ocean. Two strong MJO events in October and November 2011 were linked to global circumnavigating Kelvin waves, but local process over the Indian Ocean assisted with MJO convective development there. Those processes include regional moisture advection, midlatitude influences, evolving cloud populations, air--sea interaction, the diurnal cycle, and (potentially) radiative-convective instability.
