ICON-ESM (Ruby) maintains several set-ups tailored to specific applications. They are designed to use innovative features specific to ICON. For example, ICON’s singularity-free grids avoid restrictions concerning continental configurations, allowing for undisturbed Aqua-Planet set-ups.
The configurations extend from very low-resolution (Ruby-SWITCH) for training purposes and multi-millennial simulations at an efficiency close to Intermediate Complexity Models, to the high end of climate models (Ruby-2) with eddy-resolving ocean and atmosphere resolution that formerly was merely applied in regional models. The chosen set-ups are designed to take full advantage of ICON’s flexibility, scaling performance, and further innovative features specific to ICON.
| Resolution (atmos/ocean) | Purpose |
Ruby-0 | R2B4/R2B6 (160/40km) | CMIP-type experiments, large ensembles |
Ruby-1 | R2B5/R2B7 (80/20km) | Near-term predictions |
Ruby-2 | R2B6/R2B8 (40/10km) | Role of highly resolved air-sea interaction for climate variability |
Ruby SWITCH | R2B3/R2B4 (320/160km) | Global carbon cycle, paleo studies, training, education |
