The ocean hosts many dynamic processes that influence climate: large-scale circulation patterns, biogeochemistry and sea ice. In the ocean research area we investigate these processes at multiple scales, and at different periods in Earth’s history, using coupled ocean-atmosphere models, observational data and statistical analysis.

Doctoral candidates are affiliated with either the department The Ocean in the Earth System at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology or the Institute of Oceanography at the Universität Hamburg. Individual research topics are inspired and guided by the interests of the candidate’s host research group.
