Introduction to Earth system science and modelling

In this one-week block course the concepts of Earth system modelling and computation are introduced by focusing on conceptual aspects.

The course is centered around a simple box model that couples temperature to carbon and, through parameterizations, has links to atmospheric processes, ocean heat uptake, ocean and land carbon, and land biophysical processes. Lecturers discuss major model components and parameters, and outline what the model can, as well as what it cannot, explain.

The discussion of the limitations of simple models lead towards more comprehensive approaches that are at the center of the Earth System Modelling Sumer School of the IMPRS-ESM.
