In the department The Atmosphere in the Earth System, we are looking for a

Postdoctoral Scientist (W082)

for research in the joint project “The quasi-biennial oscillation in a changing climate” (QUBICC), which contributes to the BMBF funded research programme "Role Of the Middle atmosphere In Climate” (ROMIC-II). The focus of the research will be on processes by which the quasi-biennial oscillation of stratospheric winds can modify tropical deep convection. The position involves the evaluation and execution of storm resolving numerical experiments based on the ICON atmosphere model. The successful candidates will be part of the Research Group Wave Driven Circulation in the Department The Atmosphere in the Earth System.

 

Responsibilities

  • Conduct process studies pertinent to our understanding of the quasi-biennial oscillation and its effects on the tropical deep convection by means of deep convection resolving realistic and idealized simulations based on the ICON model.
  • Disseminate the results through high quality peer-reviewed publications and presentations at conferences.

 

Qualifications/Experience

  • A PhD in Meteorology, Geosciences, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience in performing and analyzing experiments with comprehensive atmospheric or Earth system models.
  • Excellent communication skills and publication record.
  • Familiarity with running and coding computer models preferably on HPC platforms, programming and scripting skills in UNIX environments.

 

Employment conditions

  • The position is starting as soon as possible and limited until 31.5.2023
  • Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E14) including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science and those of the German civil service.
