Joint Seminar: Closing the sea level budget with the latest ECCO global ocean state estimate

The Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) project provides global, multi-decadal physically-consistent estimates of the sea level budget by constraining ocean general circulation models with diverse in situ and satellite observations. The time-evolution of ECCO estimates strictly obey the laws of physics and thermodynamics, which makes them useful for assessing the decomposing observed sea level changes into their steric and manometric contributions, and for tracing the origins of sea level changes on regional-to-global and interannual-to-decadal timescales. Here, we present the latest global and regional sea-level budget closure from ECCO over the satellite altimetry period and compare ECCO’s global and regional ocean warming and freshening trends against other estimates. We also identify some interesting spatio-temporal patterns in the residual misfits between ECCO and the observational data constraints (Argo, satellite sea level, and satellite gravimetry) that could be due to uncorrected systematic observational errors, and assess how these (potential) errors impact our partitioning of the sea level budget.
