Joint Seminar: Climate change adaptation: From local challenges to global perspectives
Adaptation to climate change has not received the same level of global attention as mitigation in recent climate discussions, despite it also being a part of the Paris Agreement. It is a pivotal part of climate policy, essential to reducing vulnerability among local populations, especially in the Global South. In this seminar we will showcase how science can play a fundamental role in boosting local adaptation efforts by looking at an example of science-based adaptation strategies in Central America and looking at the (missing) links in current and future national climate adaptation policies in Guatemala. Finally, we will give a brief overview of the global status of the high-level adaptation discourse before COP28, the commitments made (and likely not to be met) by countries in the Global North, and an overview on the Global Goal on Adaptation.
