“Prof. Hartmut Grassl has dedicated his scientific work as a physicist and his societal commitment to the issues of global environmental change and climate change in an outstanding way. He has always demanded the institutional responsibility of science and personally lived the individual responsibility as a scientist,” says Prof. Ulrike Beisiegel, former president of the University of Göttingen and co-chair of the Federation of German Scientists about the climate researcher´s award. “Hartmut Grassl´s commitment is honored with the Max Born Medal. He is a role model for young scientists who face very special challenges today.”

The graduate physicist and meteorologist is not only director emeritus at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology but also professor emeritus at the Meteorological Institute at Universität Hamburg. He was director of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) in Geneva, twice member and chairman of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU), winner of the German Environmental Award for his contribution to the explanation and prediction of climate variability, and co-chair of the Board of Directors of the Federation of German Scientists. On behalf of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Prof. Martin Claussen conveyed his congratulations during the meeting and is pleased for his scientific companion about the award.

About the Max Born Medal
Max Born was instrumental in the development of quantum mechanics, received the Nobel Prize in Physics for it, and actively promoted responsible science. In memory of his work, the Max Born Medal has been awarded by the “Gesellschaft für die Verantwortung in der Wissenschaft (GVW)” since 1972; since 2022, the Federation of German Scientists has assumed this task in the tradition of the GVW. The medal is awarded for services to the responsibility of science.
