Daniel Klocke: Back at the MPI-M in a new position

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) welcomes Dr Daniel Klocke as a new group leader at the institute. As head of the Computational Infrastructure and Model Development (CIMD) group, Daniel Klocke will be significantly responsible for modeling activities at MPI-M related to internal, national and international projects. He will coordinate and provide strategic guidance from the technical side for the development of next generation Earth system models. The further development of ICON within the modeling strategy "Ruby and Sapphire" will be in the foreground.

Daniel Klocke has all the prerequisites for this task. After studying meteorology at the Universität Hamburg and completing his PhD at MPI-M in 2011, Daniel Klocke worked for two years at ECMWF in Reading, UK, in the EU Cloud Intercomparison, Process Study & Evaluation Project (EUCLIPSE), in which MPI-M was also involved. He then moved to the German Meteorological Service (DWD) for two years and worked in the High Definition Cloud and Precipitation for Advancing Climate Prediction (HD(CP)2) project. Under the leadership of MPI-M, this project further developed the ICON model for very high-resolution simulations. Since 2015, he had a close cooperation with the working group "Precipitating Convection” of Cathy Hohenegger at MPI-M as topic leader at the Hans Ertel Center for Weather Research (HErZ) at DWD. Until his move back to MPI-M, Daniel Klocke has already worked with the Earth system model ICON in the last years. In cooperation with colleagues at MPI-M, he has been involved in the development of "Sapphire" and coordinated the DYAMOND project. Daniel Klocke: "I am looking forward to the new tasks at MPI-M. These are exciting times in climate model development. With the support of our partners and upcoming projects such as NextGEMS and Destination Earth, great progress in the development of the next generation of climate models is expected at MPI-M in the coming years."
