Land use and forest cover changes

The vegetation cover is an important factor for the Earth’s carbon budget. The animation shows the global development of forest cover (column hight) parallel to the change in carbon uptake (green = increase, brown = decrease) on land, in vegetation and soil, for the scenario RCP8.5 for the years 1850 to 2300.
The RCP8.5 scenario, which is characterized by a drastic increase in fossil emissions, clearly illustrates the severe deforestation in the tropics, which results in a significant loss of carbon in the 23rd century. As a result of the intense global warming, the northern forests expanding into the Arctic, where they take up a significant amount of carbon.
